LANSING, Mich. — Edward Bruun, president and chief executive officer, Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Johns, was honored Sunday evening with the 2009 MHA Health Care Leadership Award, presented by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) during the MHA Health Foundation Governance Leadership Forum in Boyne Falls. Also receiving the award was David Blair, MD, president and chief medical officer, Advantage Health Physician Network, Grand Rapids.
Bruun was appointed to the Clinton Memorial Hospital (CMH) Board in 2002 as a representative of its parent organization Sparrow Health System and was named president and chief executive officer of CMH in 2004. Under his leadership, CMH has developed from a financially struggling, small hospital to a growing, profitable Critical Access Hospital with nationally recognized patient, physician and associate satisfaction scores.
Bruun is extremely adept at bringing people together with a common purpose and vision, because he has a true passion for making the health care experience the very best possible for patients. He has improved services and reduced costs at the hospital and has helped CMH integrate and use the resources of the health system.
During his first weeks on the job, Bruun focused on the hospital’s mission while building a leadership team that combined the strengths of community leaders and hospital managers. Under five years of his leadership, the hospital expanded services to the community; hired additional physicians; improved Medicare reimbursement; increased use of services; improved patient, physician and employee satisfaction; and showed consistent improvement in quality measures.
Based in Lansing, the MHA represents all 144 nonprofit community hospitals in the state and successfully advocates on behalf of hospitals and the patients they serve. The MHA addresses key issues in the legislative and regulatory arenas to advance initiatives that protect quality, cost-effective and accessible care. To learn more, visit www.MHA.org.
