Three Generations Walk on Labor Day, 9/16/2009

On Labor Day, Carson City Hospital (CCH) hosted the first-ever Carson Community Walk at Frontier Park in Carson City.

“This event was part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Labor Day Bridge Walk,” said event coordinator Jennifer Churchill, the public relations manager at CCH. Similar to the way the Mighty Mac links Michigan’s two peninsulas during the famous annual Mackinaw Bridge Walk, Labor Day walks throughout the state linked communities together for health, fitness and active living.”

Churchill said approximately 40 people came out during the morning walk, and enjoyed free apples and bottled water donated by Anderson & Girls Orchards and Carson Village Market, as well as prizes and give-aways donated by the hospital.

Each year, approximately 50,000 Michigan residents participate in the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk, an annual event that began on Labor Day in 1958.

“With communities holding local events all across the state, we hope to double or even triple the number of walkers on Labor Day and bring attention to the importance of physical activity for the health of Michigan,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.

Sponsorship from Farm Bureau Insurance enabled the Governor’s Council to provide free materials to assist community leaders in planning a successful event. To view the complete list of registered 2009 Labor Day Community Walks, visit www.michiganfitness.org/LDComBridgeWalk.htm.
