Center features latest breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment

LANSING, Mich. — Reinforcing its historically prominent role meeting the health care needs of the people of mid-Michigan, Sparrow Hospital has unveiled the new Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center on the fourth floor of the 10-story Sparrow Tower.

The 40,000-square-foot center features some of the nation’s best heart and vascular experts — mid-Michigan’s most advanced heart and vascular program — and patient care amenities that place it among the finest facilities of its kind. State-of-the-art technology, research, personalized care and excellent clinical outcomes are all hallmarks of the new Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center.

“This facility, with its highly advanced technology, places Sparrow among the finest centers anywhere for treatment of diseases of the heart and vascular system,” said Milind Karve, MD, Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center’s Medical Director. “Operationally, we have moved from separate hospital units into one comprehensive facility. We’re organized around patient needs."

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and Michigan is ranked as the 13th worst state for CVD mortality in the nation.

The Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center is on the cutting edge of treatments for vascular disease. Sparrow doctors were the first in mid-Michigan to perform a procedure using the Diamondback 360 Orbital Atherectomy System, an innovative, new way to clear clogged blood vessels using a catheter attached with a tiny, spinning, diamond-coated crown-shaped disk.

This new technology, available only in a handful of hospitals in the nation, allows doctors an exciting, new option in treating peripheral arterial disease, a life-threatening condition affecting as many as 12 million Americans.

These advanced options for the treatment of vascular disease complement the leadership role that Sparrow has taken in providing the finest cardiovascular services available, offering the region’s only cardiac catheterization laboratory with Stereotaxis magnetic navigation technology. Stereotaxis enables physicians to conduct precise remotely controlled, image-guided computerized interventional procedures with greater efficiency and patient safety.

“The Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center represents a new era in heart and vascular care for mid-Michigan residents,” Dr. Karve said. “With leading-edge diagnosis and treatment, there’s no doubt that the Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center is where your heart should be.”
